Questo è uno specchio
Scattarsi un selfie nelle superfici riflettenti è una tentazione universale.
Ci si guarda. Ci si scatta un selfie. Poi si legge: l’indifferenza uccide.
Lo specchio non mente: restituisce solo chi lo guarda. Ed è proprio questo il punto che l’opera mette a nudo — l’indifferenza non è uno sguardo assente, è uno sguardo che si ferma sempre su di sé, prima di poter vedere l’altro.
Il sussulto non nasce da una verità nuova. Nasce dal riconoscersi, per un istante, dentro l’accusa: si stava facendo esattamente ciò che la frase condanna. Non guerra, non odio — solo la superficie, l’apparire, il proprio riflesso preferito a tutto il resto.
È la banalità del male di Arendt: non serve cattiveria per uccidere, basta non guardare abbastanza a fondo. L’ottone non racconta l’indifferenza — la fa accadere, nello stesso gesto di chi si osserva.
Catartico? Solo come uno strappo. Non purificazione, riconoscimento — e il riconoscimento è l’unico varco per smettere, anche solo per un istante, di essere indifferenti.

The mirror doesn’t lie: it gives back only whoever is looking at it. And this is exactly what the work exposes — indifference is not an absent gaze, it’s a gaze that always stops on itself, before it can ever see the other.
The flinch doesn’t come from some new truth. It comes from recognizing yourself, for an instant, inside the accusation: you were doing exactly what the phrase condemns. Not war, not hatred — only the surface, the appearance, one’s own reflection preferred over everything else.
It’s Arendt’s banality of evil: it takes no cruelty to kill, only a failure to look deep enough. The brass doesn’t narrate indifference — it makes it happen, in the very gesture of whoever is looking at themselves.
Cathartic? Only as a tear. Not purification — recognition. And recognition is the only opening through which one can stop, even if just for a moment, being indifferent.
