Libertus era, in latino, uno schiavo liberato. La schiavitù non riguardava solo gli aspetti lavorativi, ma anche
la mancanza di libertà di espressione. Chi ne era soggetto, infatti, subiva coercizioni fisiche e di parola. A
essere schiava era anche la sua bocca, impedita di prendere parola in pubblico, e quindi ad assumere un
ruolo sociale riconosciuto, degno di ascolto. Per questo, in futuro, saranno proprio i Libertini ad
incarnare l’immagine dei liberi pensatori, affrancati dall’asservimento a dogmatismi e a convenzioni ipocrite,
bigotte, acritiche. Essere liberi significa innanzitutto essere liberi di pensare, di parlare, di essere partecipi e
attori nel tessuto sociale; significa dare peso, voce e corpo alla propria appartenenza comunitaria. La libertà
non è affatto globale e condivisa dai popoli, a tanti secoli di distanza dallo schiavismo degli antichi. Anche
assente o repressa e soffocata, è quanto più spaventa e preoccupa i regimi.

Libertus was, in Latin, a freed slave. Slavery did not pertain solely to the working sphere, but also to the lack of freedom of expression. Slaves were subjected to physical and verbal coercion. Their mouth, too, was enslaved — forbidden from taking the floor in public, and thus from assuming a recognized social role, one worthy of being listened to. For this reason, in the future, Libertines would come to embody the image of free thinkers, no longer subjugated to dogmatism and to deceiving, self-righteous, unquestioning norms. To be free means, above all, to be free to think, to speak, to be part of the social fabric; it means giving weight, voice, and body to one’s sense of belonging to a community. Freedom is far from global or equally shared among peoples, even centuries after the slavery of the ancients. Even when absent, repressed, or suffocated, it is precisely freedom that frightens and unsettles regimes the most.
