In these drawings, gold leaf doesn’t decorate: it denounces. It marks, point by point, the exact places where a woman’s body carries the signs of domestic violence — bruises, contusions, traces that are often covered with makeup, clothing, silence, before they are ever shown to anyone.
Hiding a bruise is a gesture learned early, almost automatic: covered out of shame, out of fear of judgment, to protect whoever struck the blow, to avoid uncomfortable questions. But that shame does not belong to whoever suffers it — it has only been unjustly transferred from the guilty to the victim.
Covering in gold exactly the points one has learned to hide overturns that mechanism: the gold doesn’t beautify the wound, it makes it impossible to ignore. What used to be covered becomes the center of the image; what was meant to stay invisible becomes what stands out the most. To show, in this case, is already a political act: it means no longer treating violence as a private matter to be hidden, and beginning instead to treat it for what it is — something that must be seen, recognized, reported.

spogliatoio.
stessa.

There are some things you can’t hide
If you are born a woman, no matter where in this world, your life is geared towards
meeting a number of demands. They ask us to wear our wounds as medals of valor. To be
strong and an example to others, covering our bruised dark circles with the latest in
cosmetic technology. To wrap our bodies in tissues that hide the violence they inflict on
us and that we inflict on ourselves daily. Smile at the cameras while you beat your chest in
pain. Cry, give vent to your tears, for the sake of the audience. Don’t show the anger, just
the pain of the eternal victim, remember. Sit up straight, you’ll look thinner. Look at that
bitch, all skin and bones, real women have curves, smile and don’t complain. To reinvent
ourselves as entrepreneurs of ourselves, of our pain. Show that after the Orc, there is
hope for a future. Your place has already been decided, by tele-vote or GI survey,
national-populism on our skin.

There are things you can’t hide anymore. Well-dressed mannequins, existential corpses
that wander around on 12 cm heels to highlight your ass, sculpted by hours of exercises in
which you learn to hate your body. Overweight women who compensate for the anxiety
of existing by eating everything: if you don’t love yourself first, who do you want to take
you? You suck cock, love more. Eat less, become the shadow of who you are, make
yourself small and insignificant: there is little space you can occupy in this world. Don’t
raise your voice, don’t interrupt – and have a laugh, you can’t even joke anymore, you take
it too much. To get a shred of dignity you pass for a bitch who doesn’t fuck enough.
*
There are some things you can’t hide, like the number of calls to the anti-violence centers
during these weeks of quarantine. The doors slammed in the face by the counselling
centres because, today as yesterday, deciding on one’s own body is not a priority. Self-
determination is a luxury we cannot afford. We always come after all the emergencies, the
crises, we must be ready to sacrifice ourselves for the greater good, that of normalizing
the aberrant daily routine. Yesterday, today and tomorrow.

There are some things you can’t hide. The supposed freedom acquired in exchange for
dignity. You wanted to have fun and exercise your right to sexuality? You deserve the
rape, the physical and the moral one, virtual, made on the details of how you were made
up that night. Did you want the exotic cock, foreigner? You deserve the bruises, the
violence and the public shame. With an Italic dick, everything would stay within the walls
of the house. We’re men, not beasts. Did they share photos, videos, your private life, your
intimacy? What the fuck did you expect, bitch? That I wouldn’t exchange your
information and photos for advice on how to rape, denigrate and humiliate? Come on,
that’s guy stuff, locker room talk. But let’s remember, not all men eh, let’s not mix shit
with chocolate. I’m a good guy.
There are things you can’t hide anymore. But the narrative remains true to itself.
